The shores are dotted with villages, some of which are of ancient origin, as can be seen by the forts, castles and city walls that reflect the centuries of conflict between those of the Veneto and those of Lombardy. These villages are joined one to another by the main coastal road known as the Gardesana. The beauty of nature is accentuated by a very mild local climate that enables typically Mediterranean plants such as olives, cypresses and lemons to thrive here undisturbed. The weather is mitigated by the body of water and the protection afforded by the surrounding mountains that ensure the whole area is never too hot in summer nor too cold in winter.
 
The lake area offers sports enthusiasts a wide choice of activities including swimming, golf, horse riding, windsurfing, nordic walking and hiking. For lovers of rather more extreme sports like free-climbing, hang-gliding and parasailing, Lake Garda is a favourite gathering point. This area is also home to many leisure time attractions for people of all tastes and ages including: zoos and safari parks, spa parks, theme parks like Gardaland, Movieland and Caneva World, botanical gardens, water parks and more.
